An evening with Radar

After more than a week with lots of guests, lots of activity and a goofed up schedule, tonight it's back to just Radar and mommy (and Fanny of course*) before more guests arrive tomorrow. As I think I've mentioned in the recent past, Radar is still sleeping in bed with me. But since he's almost able to roll from his back to his tummy, I'll soon have to either move Radar to his crib or we'll have sleep on the floor!

In the event that we go with the crib, which has been sitting idly for 4 and a half months now...

I thought we'd at least give the old crib some daytime action to break it in a bit.
Then it was bath time, so I went to the drawer to find a jammy and found some of Radar's newborn onesies... can you tell that he's grown just a wee bit?
We did our bath in rubber ducky tonight (a gift from Marco and Frank) and to make things more interesting, I threw in some toys... it worked! Radar was in no hurry to finish his bath (he usually gets pissed pretty quickly and wants it done with).
After drying off and lubing up with some yummy baby lotion, Radar asked if it would be ok to just hang out naked for a few minutes. How could mommy deny her chubby prince such a small pleasure?
And now Radar is taking a little nap. I gotta tell ya... it may seem like pretty routine stuff, but spending my evening with Radar doing all this ordinary stuff is the central joy of my life! Who wouldn't just love hanging out and doing stuff with this guy?
Lots of love,
Titi and Radar

Mixing it up

April 30th UPDATE

This is not the April 30th post, but I just wanted to give a quick update to yesterday's post.  In two words... 13 hours!  Yes, Radar slept 13 hours last night.  It was one of those nights when I had repeatedly wake up to stare at his chest to make sure he was breathing (I think most moms know all about that).  So both mommy and Radar are brand new today!  More later...

I've never been too good at keeping to a routine, but I thought I had a pretty good one going.  My weekdays would start somewhere between 5:30 and 6:30am, dependent on the whims of my very cute alarm clock.  We get up to talk and play for a bit.  Then either my house guest wakes up or the nanny arrives and I do a hand off so that I can go shower.  I pump all the milk I can, drink coffee, eat cereal, pack lunch, kiss and snuggle Radar and head off to work.  In the evening I get home between 5 and 6 to savor a few fun hours of nursing, playing, talking and reading with Radar before he dozes off for the night sometime between 7:30 and 8:30pm.  Then I blog.

But maybe Radar is not so good at sticking to a routine or maybe he doesn't want to be taken for granted.  Whatever the reason, Radar decided to mix things up a bit yesterday.  It started with an earlier than usual wake-up call (just before 5am).  I thought maybe the military fatigues he wore to bed confused him into believing he was at boot camp.  Whatever the reason, we got up and started work early (he goes to his "office" and whacks some toys, throws others and sticks the rest in his mouth).  Mum-mum and the nanny patrol (there were two nannies yesterday) took over and I went to work as usual.

I thought that the morning modification would be it - a small adjustment really - I could handle that.  Then came the evening.  Radar dozed off beside me at 7 or so and I wondered if that was it for the night.  Brown eyes popped open 15 minutes later... guess not.  He dozed off again around 8:30 and I thought this must be it.  Eyeballs again within 15 minutes.  At just after 9pm I took him up to bed with a bottle.  He wanted nothing to do with the bottle, with the bed, with the dark room or with my singing and my massages, and he let me know this by screaming at a window-shattering pitch.

So we got up.  We went downstairs.  He went back to his "office" and was mildly entertained for a few minutes, beating his toys and throwing others, all the while trying to cram one whole hand into his mouth.  But it didn't last long and he went back to screaming.  This "few minutes of screaming" and a "few minutes of mommy trying to calm Radar down" and a "few minutes of distraction" pattern cycled until sometime around 11:30pm when he conked out.  I threw in some infant Tylenol around 10:30 or so, but that didn't seem to do too much.

This morning he slept in until about 8:30 and now my routine is totally shot!  I don't know if it was a fluke or if we're just making some time adjustments or if Radar is starting to teethe?  As you can see, the change has disrupted my blogging pattern... I missed a day, I am blogging on my lunch hour AND I have no new pictures to share (because my camera is at home and NOT because I didn't take any new pictures).

Let's see what happens tonight.

Lots of love,
Titi and Radar

ps - I will be doing a "recipe" post this weekend where I will share a few recipes.  If you've got a favorite you'd like to share, please e-mail it to me at the address on the sidebar.

Back to work

Well, after a long and very eventful weekend, I took the day off of work. But Radar insisted on going back to work...

But as you can see, maybe he should have taken the day off as well.

And things didn't get any better at his ROTC training later in the day.

Maybe tomorrow we'll get a little more done.

Good night, hugs and pugs!

Lots of love,
Titi and Radar

Then why do it?

Before telling you a bit about today, Radar's Baptism day, let me preface everything with this...

Yes, I am lactating, I wore a dark green shirt and I forgot to stuff some breast pads into my bra. That is why in most of the pictures you'll see later in the post, I have Radar's receiving blanket draped over me to cover my squishy, leaking boobs. That's embarrassing, so I wanted to get that out there so we could just move past it!

Then there's this...

Lali brought Radar a bunch of new outfits and she insisted that Radar try them all and that we take pictures. I have no objection, but after the second change of clothes (the Banana Bandit), Radar did have some objections and the modeling session was called to a premature conclusion. The next outfit our friend was to put on was his white tux and shades for the big event... the Paparazzi went nuts as soon as we got into the car!

Then of course there was mass and the Baptism itself... but before I move onto those pictures, I wanted to address a question that more than one person has posed. Those who know me at all know that I'm hardly a devout Catholic... so why baptize Radar? I categorically do not believe that a child who is not baptized will go to hell and that is principally because I categorically do not believe there is a hell. I also have big issues with the Catholic Church specifically and organized religions in general. But I won't go into that here. Instead I'll just answer the "then why do it?" question.

First, I like tradition and I like reasons to celebrate Radar.

Second, I think life can be a little easier if you have a religious identity. Radar is officially Catholic now, just like I have always been officially Catholic. I went to an all girls Catholic school where I got a very good eduction and having that religious identity (even though I was a pretty bad Catholic way back in primary school already), I think made things easier for me.

Third, even though I'm not a huge fan of the "big" religion, I am a very big fan of what a church can do on an individual or community level. On the community level, churches feed the poor, care for the sick and provide company for the lonely.

Fourth and last for now is that I want Radar to have something that has been so wonderful in my life - I want Radar to have godparents who love him like family. I am so lucky to have godparents who, because they are my godparents, are my family. My godparents were Cuban friends of my parents when we lived in Boston (where I was born). They were good friends and maybe we would have kept in touch, but maybe not. We moved away from Boston when I was very young and yet because they were my godparents, I have always known them as my family. I want Radar to have that and I think that I picked two people that will give him that.

So that's my short explanation... now here are some photos from our wonderful day. Radar spent more than three hours in church today (2 for mass and 1 for the Baptism) and he never cried! He was a trooper and in my strong opinion, the best looking of the 10 or so babies that were Baptized today. I've also included just a couple from the after party which, despite her comment in yesterday's post, was all the poorer for not having had the flavorful and fun presence of my Tia Sara!!!

And finally, I just want to thank Radar's new godparents... my best friend Gail and my dear amigo Claudio! Thank you a million times over for flying here for today and for loving my precious son. I love you both!!!

Lots of love,
Titi and Radar

PS - For the Channel Swimmer... I will address your very important gifts in a separate post. They are far too important to just mix in with this post!

Random shots from today

I would write more about all of the many exciting happenings of today, but in addition to welcoming Radar's godmother (Gail), Tia Lali, Maria (the nanny), and a multitude of other guests, mommy also celebrated more than she should (3 1/2 beers)... that's got mommy pretty tongue tied and doing some pump n' dump! So instead of writing, I'll just make today's post a picture post to give you a taste of what it's been like in our house today...

We'll be on our best behavior at least for the first part of tomorrow as we celebrate Radar's baptism... I can't vouch for anyone's behavior at the after party though!

Lots of love,
Titi and Radar

He's my son!

Normally when people say, "he looks like you," I don't take it too seriously because I'm this old lady and he's this cute, chubby baby... that is until my mom brought some of my baby pictures...

So I guess this is what we have to look forward to not too far down the line!

Tomorrow's a big day, so we'll bid everyone a good night.
Lots of love,
Titi and Radar

Earth Day Warning!!!

Happy Earth Day everyone!

I just wanted to give all of our Radar Love followers an Earth Day warning that we will be conserving energy by not blogging tomorrow! Actually, the board of directors of my company is coming into town tomorrow for meetings and I'll be at the office by 7am, in meetings all day and then after a quick trip home to drop off milk and stick a boob in Radar's mouth, it'll be back out to dinner with the directors.

So you can all have a day off, but then please do check back as this weekend has much in store with Mum-mum, Tia Lali and godmother Gail all coming to town on Friday and Saturday for Sunday's big event!

Lots of love & go green!!
Titi and Radar

Baby forever

Juggling work, baby and blog is tough enough, but when I have guests from out of town, it gets even tougher to manage and that's why I'm posting at 10:30 at night. When I got home, Claudio declared that it was off to a restaurant and the choice was mine... what to eat, what to eat? What had I not eaten for a long time? What did I not eat during my whole pregnancy because some book told me not to? What is basically my favorite dinner?

So this evening while we stuffed raw fish down our gullets, Radar was passed from one person to the next. Our table overlooked Bay Street and the water, so there was no chance he was going to fall asleep... way too many lights, people, cars, boats and other diversions. So I guess you can say we had both a boat for three (that giant sushi thing in the third picture) and a baby for three!! Anyhoo... it was a wonderful dinner and a reminder that I love SUSHI!!!

Oh, and the subject line about "baby forever" has nothing to do with Radar. He's obviously growing and learning and as much as I hate to think it, I know that he won't be a baby forever (although he'll always be MY baby)... someone else though seems to be quite content with her baby forever status!!

Lots of love,
Titi and Radar
