Meet pumpkin #3

Can't write much now because we're off to go get some last minute 'boo' supplies for tomorrow, but I thought I'd leave you with Mr. Pumpkin #3 and his little friend!

Backfire...

I should have already learned this, but tonight I learned again that making plans for a toddler holds a high probability of backfiring. I've been having so much fun planning for Halloween thinking that it would also somehow be fun for Radar. Other than coloring his pumpkin though, he's been pretty disinterested.

But what I wasn't really anticipating was that one of my bigger plans that very much relied on Radar as its literal core, would present a problem.

I figured that since this is really the only year when Radar and Fanny will be about the same size, they could switch roles for Halloween. I know I won't have an issue dressing Fanny in some Radar pajamas... I also thought that dressing Radar in a pug costume would be a cinch. Afterall, he had zero issues with the Superman outfit and he's never fussed about any outfit I've chosen - he's even cool with his Batman pajamas. What could go wrong?

And with that confidence, I spent a few precious hours turning this...

into this...

Other than the color which was much darker than advertised, I was pretty pleased with the finished product and couldn't wait to get it on Radar and take some pictures to show all of you.
And that's where my great toddler plan unexpectedly and with great thrust - BACKFIRED!!!

Radar HATES his pug costume! He was miserable and kept trying to rip it off. I tried to show him how cute he was in the mirror... nothing doing! He HATES it!

Well, I suppose I can try to brainwash him or hope that he somehow developes a liking for it in the next two days. If not, then I guess it'll be Superman for Hallween and I'll wait to see if Vivi's new baby wants to be a pug for Halloween in a couple of years (Vivi's about 39 weeks pregnant and we are anxiously awaiting the happy news of a new arrival!)

Love,
Titi and Radar

PS - This whole pug costume experiment has drained my Halloween energy for the evening and I think Pumpkin #3 will have to go on hold until tomorrow morning. But please check back because I promise my Spooky energy will be back in full force by morning!

Meet pumpkin #2

Ok, so we're getting pretty darn giddy around here... Grammy gets in tomorrow morning and then as soon as I'm done with work, we'll no doubt be pulling a late night creating, brainstorming, planning and decorating.

But for now, I've only got time to do my nightly pumpkin carving.

Meet pumpkin #2! Can you guess who this is?

Meet pumpkin #1

I have 4 pumpkins to accompany my witches and ghosts and skeletons and goblins. I carved the first this evening and will carve one each night through Saturday night. This was the easiest, so we'll see how my ambitious plans pan out!

Anyway - meet pumpkin #1!

Clouds and scribbles

Over the past month, Radar has taken on a new love of drawing with Crayons (replacing his previous love of eating Crayons). At some point every day he comes to me with his fingers in a Crayon-grip pose and he waves his hand back and forth in a scribble motion while he says "bu, bu, bu" (ie, "dibujar" ie, "draw").

A month ago his art pretty much all looked like this...

Photobucket

...but over the past week he's adopted a new technique where he makes more defined scribbles with just one or two Crayons before moving onto the next page.

Now, maybe to your novice eyes you just see more scribbles like above...

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

...but with the keen eye of a proud mother, I'm seeing some pretty incredible genius popping up from the pages like someone sees images in the clouds...

I don't know - what do you think?

And speaking of the full moon and reading the clouds, too bad that the full moon was last night and not a week from now... it would have made a great Halloween Night!!!!!

Beautiful

I have been remiss and have not given proper credit where credit is due. In this post I had put forward a challenge to name the cast of characters starring in the Monster Mash Jib Jab video... mind you, it was really just a challenge for family since no one else could possibly know the different players... and for family it shouldn't have been any kind of challenge at all since we all know each other really well and no werewolf outfit or bride of Frankenstein wig would be able to fool any of us!

With that said, let me shout out a big congratulatory

Photobucket

to Marco who guessed the line-up correctly!

And now let me shout out an even bigger defamatory

Photobucket

to the Science Pundit who didn't recognize his own sister...

... and the biggest

Photobucket

of them all for Tia Sara who didn't recognize her own grandson!

Ok - enough of that. This post is titled beautiful, so let's get back to that. I named it that and started writing this post just as Radar was finishing up dinner this evening. I had my camera in hand and as I walked past his high chair he looked so serious... so I stuck out my tongue. He smirked at that, so I made googly eyes and burping noises. And that sent him into a mouth- filled-with-food giggle attack!!! Naturally I snapped a picture of each stage and when I scrolled through the pictures, that's the word that struck me.

Photobucket

He is beautiful!

If ever my whining about the challenges of living with a toddler leads you to doubt it, let me reassure you that I am overcome with what I feel for my son. I stare at him when he's awake and especially when he's asleep... every day... every night. I am overjoyed with his joy, I am in love with his blooming personality and I am totally overcome by how beautiful he is. So I named this post "Beautiful" before the sun set tonight.

Photobucket

And as I was typing the first couple of lines of this post, the room filled with pink light. I looked out the window and the setting sun was painting the sky and our whole world in pink and yellow. So I grabbed the camera and Radar and I and Fanny all ran outside.

Turns out that "Beautiful" was indeed a good word for today!

A toddler pumpkin

If I thought that Radar's apathy toward the whole Halloween theme was bad, then I guess I'm forgetting that last year he really, really wasn't impressed. At least this year he likes balloons (that I'm using for my projects) and he panicked and cried at some ghost sounds I was recording earlier today and he's absolutely nuts about chocolate. "Kah-Keh" (chocolate) is a new word used with tremendous frequency in this house (second only to "carro" I believe).

So in a way, he's enthusiastic about the season... even if he doesn't realize it. Anyway - I'll take what I can get. And I figure since he's crazy about chocolate, maybe he'll want to actually go trick-or-treating if he realized that people are putting chocolate in his pumpkin!

That means we need a Halloween candy collecting pumpkin. And sure, I could go buy one...

... but that would take the fun out of it.

So I found a way to finally involve Radar in a Hallween project. With a papier mache balloon that I painted white and lined with plastic, we had our template.

Photobucket

As you can see, Radar has matured since the last time we finger painted. Now he's careful not to make a mess...

Photobucket

...at least not a terrible mess. It is finger-paint afterall and you can't do it without getting some paint on your fingers!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Although, come to think of it, just painting the bowl and just using a couple of fingers is sort of boring, so who can blame him for going a little nuts...

Photobucket

...or even a lot nuts!!!

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

The important thing is that at the end of the great toddler pumpkin project, we have ourselves a masterpiece...

Photobucket

...and we have ourselves a little boy who's just a little more excited about Halloween than he was at the beginning of the day!!!

Lots of love,
Titi and Radar

PS - The recipe for the above toddler pumpkin is pretty easy (although messy).

1. blow up a balloon and make a simple papier mache (at least two layers, (ie, layer - dry - layer again) to make sure bowl will be sturdy enough to hold candy.

2. once dry, pop balloon and cut the papier mache to the size you want for your bowl.

3. line with plastic - to do this, I simply painted the inside with Elmer's glue, then lined it with a piece of thin plastic tablecloth. I then inserted a new balloon (same size as papier mache balloon) and blew it up inside the bowl to push the plastic in place until it dries.

4. I then painted the balloon white with non-toxic poster paint.

5. Once that was dry & the glue was dry, I popped the balloon and placed the bowl upside down on a filled gallon water jug to hold it in place to paint.

6. Then I let Radar at it with non-toxic poster paint.

7. Once all the paint was dry, I folded the excess plastic over the rim of the bowl and stapled orange crepe paper streamer ribbon around the rim of the bowl.

8. Finally, I found an appropriate colored handle, folded it over the rim and sewed it in place.

Mind you, it's not water proof by any measure, but it should get us through this Halloween in fine fashion.

PSS - Oh, and since I'm adding this addendum to this post, I might as well post one more of today's projects...

Door / yard signs!
Photobucket

PSS - Oh, and Bruja continues on her way to completion...

Photobucket

... and if you're wondering why she and Skeletor have the same sort of eyes, it could either be that they're related or that I bought a 12 pack of eyeballs!!!

PSSS- Ok, just this last thought for the night related to my PSS... I sort of hope they're not related because they make a rather cute couple!

Photobucket
Photobucket

PSSSS - Alright... really this is the last comment for the night. I'd like to just remind some of you out there (the Science Pundit in particular) that this is a family blog and there's no call for pointing out that the witch's nose looks like a big green wee wee!

Who's the little kid in our house?

Honestly, Halloween is sooooo much fun... at least for me. In fact, I don't think that Radar is all too impressed as of yet. Other than getting to dress in underwear and a cape today, he hasn't gotten to really dig into the good stuff. I tried letting him participate in a couple of projects (papier mache and clay), but he's more interested in either eating the project or feeding it to Fanny. Oh well - maybe he'll enjoy the finished product and if not, there's always next year. I'm happy to pinch hit as the mess-making kid of the house!

As for this year and today's obsession in particular... there's this silly papier mache ghost...

Photobucket

But that was barely a blip on the radar (that's little "r" radar) of whackiness. Let me introduce you to my bruja who is about 50% finished.

She started like this...

Photobucket

then became this...

Photobucket

then hung around for the night like this...

Photobucket

and finally will be spending tonight drying like this...

Photobucket

We're only a couple of weeks away now, so there no more time to waste blogging!!!!

Lots of love,
Titi and Radar (that's capital "R" Radar)
